When Dental Implants Are a Good Idea

Published July 28th, 2017 by Vincent Vella DDS

You don't have to live with dentures. If you have suffered the loss of a permanent tooth, dental implants are a good option. In most cases, they provide a better solution than dentures and can serve you well for many years to come.

Reasons to get dental implants

There are far more pros than cons when it comes to seeking implants. Some of the reasons that people choose implants over dentures.

  • Implants can last for life. As long as you are willing to put in the oral hygiene work to keep your gums healthy, your dental implants can last for the rest of your life.
  • Implants can keep your mouth healthier. When there are open spaces on your gums, your other teeth will shift to fill the space. Your jaw can also degrade without the support of a natural tooth. Dental implants function just like your natural teeth, keeping your mouth healthier, longer.
  • Implants do not cause constant irritation. Once the site of your dental implant has fully healed, it will feel just like having your natural teeth. Dentures can abrade and irritate your gums, which can lead to discomfort or infection.
  • Dental implants let you eat what you want. Some people have to limit their diet when they try to eat with open spaces in their teeth or dentures. Implants eliminate this issue and allow you to eat everything you can with healthy natural teeth.

Who shouldn't get dental implants?

There are only a few situations where dental implants are not medically advisable. If you fall into these categories, implants may not be a good choice for you:

  • You are pregnant. Experts recommend waiting until after pregnancy to begin dental implant treatment.
  • You have a disease that impairs healing. People who have diseases such as diabetes, leukemia or certain autoimmune disorders may not be good candidates for dental implants. Talk to your dentist about your body's healing ability to learn whether dental implants are a good choice for you.
  • Your jaw bone or gums are damaged. To be a good candidate for dental implants, you need to have enough bone to hold the implant. Talk to your dentist to see if this is an issue for you.

There are more reasons to get implants than there are to avoid them. Dental implants are appropriate for people of any age and can help you maintain your health and personal wellness.
